A Good Woman's Love

One of my favorite Tony Rice songs is his rendition of the the song A Good Woman's Love, by Cy Coben. It's also a song I used to enjoy playing at bluegrass jams with friends, all of which have now been on pause for months. Thankfully a few of my favorite bluegrass jammers have home recording setups, so we decided to do a remote collaboration. It's on YouTube. For just a casual thing it came out pretty good, don't you think? In order of performance: Jack Parker, Mark Steudel, Tim Moran, Gordon Assadi and Art Frankel.

Now, regarding the video itself...Rather than just posting the song, last night as the snow started to fall in my backyard I decided to pull out the camera and make the song a little more interesting, which I'm starting to realize is important because most people would rather watch a video than just listen to a sound file. It's the first time I've actually lip-synced a song for a video and that part felt super weird (I'm singing it with the song playing in my earbuds), but it came out ok. Then I got the idea of adding some special effects magic throughout the piece just because, I don't know, the whole experience just sort of felt magical to me, and it makes the video a little more watchable. Turns out every single flake of falling snow in this video is fake, along with all the stuff that's obviously fake. The snow on the ground is real, as am I. Probably.

Over the next few months you're going to hear some increasingly high quality recordings coming from projects that I'm producing or co-producing. I've been working hard at that, studying a lot. A post for another day: it may be time to start helping others produce songs as a service.
