Facebook Isn't a Mailing List

[Originally posted on Facebook] I posted a music video yesterday that Facebook only let 17 of the 300 of you see in your feed... (it's still there). This is another thing people don't realize about small band life. A Facebook follow is not at all like a mailing list subscription. You'll see little of what's posted, especially if you are an observer who doesn't hit the like button much. Also, my most popular all-time posts are when I was expressing anger and frustration--and your engagement with those was highest as well btw. If we all really wanted to play along, Facebook wants me to post lots of pictures of my face with messages expressing lots of emotion, especially rage, which you'll reward with lots of "hell yeahs." It's a win win! Except we all lose. If you have musician friends who are constantly posting pictures of themselves, please understand it's not necessarily that they have a huge ego. It's that they don't have a marketing budget and they have to work the system to get through. If you actually do care about their music, you can make their lives easier by liking or commenting on their posts (not just the controversial ones!) or just finally taking 60 freakin' seconds to join their mailing list. (I said "freakin'" because I think fb will like that).
